Nearly everything in our new house will do double duty. For instance, our dining table will have clever design features so we can place it against the wall, parallel to the refrigerator and at counter height for additional kitchen workspace.
With a drop cloth over it, it will make a fine painting studio work table with room for my roll-out easel close by. When company comes for supper, we can open up the table, lower it and move it to the center of the dining area or straight outside onto the deck through the patio doors. Dining chairs will be stacked and stored in the shed.
The living room is 9 feet by 9 feet, so we’ve had to devise ways of maximizing seating and space. No room for our well-loved red leather sofas. :+( The new sofa will be a sleeper sofa for additional guest sleep overs and armless for additional sitting surface. 72″ long is the max we can squeeze in. An upholstered ottoman will serve as coffee table, foot rest and extra seating, so we’ll forgo the traditional coffee table.
Often, it’s just Michael and I at home, so rather than fill up the living area with furniture, we’ll ask our studio work chairs to do double duty. When we have guests, we’ll slide the chairs from studio to living room. Of course these chairs will need to be more comfortable and more upholstered than the usual desk chair. We spent the day in Halifax test driving occasional chairs and highly recommend sitting on every chair or sofa that you are interested in. Some that look comfortable are not and visa versa.
After hours of sitting, we did find our perfect sofa today at Zephyr on Quinpool Road It’s not a sleeper sofa, but it’s wide enough, long enough and flat enough to be quite sleepable. It’s right on target at 72″ long and Michael and both picked the same fabric – a lovely textured grey fabric with metallic silver and black threads that reminds me of pebbles on the beach.
Our choice is the armless Simone sofa from Stylus, a Canadian manufacturer. It looks like this without arm and a back that extends from end to end and it’s soooo comfy.
