Mod House Canning, NS – Painted and Landscaped

It’s been 1.5 years since we moved into our modern modular home and 1.5 years since I last posted under the title Building Small on North Avenue.    It’s been 1.5 years of landscaping our place and mostly working on design projects for my clients.  If any one is still …

A snow day here in the Valley and an opportunity to briefly document the past six weeks that have taken us from moving in, to finishing touches, to holiday entertaining, to fixing glitches, and onward to settling in with big satisfied grins. As it turned out, we had five days …

Spice is nice and it’s the colour of our new front door. Looking through the front door, you can see the hall closet and the window beyond. This is our black metal roof, nearly complete.  The house on the right is our neighbour on the production line. This is our kitchen.  These two windows will be between the counter and the upper cabinets.  Eager to see the Adorne lighting controls and receptacles installed!  Watch for an upcoming post on the Adorne product line – not your boring old light switch! Computer’s been off line for two days while we moved into our interim residence.  Rental lease is finished and new home is about 7 weeks away.  Good and kind friends have offered up their lovely home, perched high on a hill.  So as the wind rips and howls around the windows on this rainy stormy night, I’m posting the latest photos from Laura at Kent Homes. The roof structure went on earlier this week and Laura video taped the process for us. Click to watch video Once the roof was attached, insulation was put in place. With no weather concerns …

Mod House Design – Canning NS.24 – Lighting Plan

Our lighting orders have been placed and here is our selection of fixtures and our lighting plan for our little home at the edge of the orchard.  If you’d like to look more closely at this plan, click on it for the larger version. My main objective for this lighting project was to strike a balance between custom, full-function lighting and a small budget, while expressing my lighting design skills.  I believe it is more challenging to design for yourself, as maintaining objectivity is no easy feat! All ceilings are sloped in our home so the lighting needs to be ceiling …

Site preparation is underway!  Our lot has been cleared, culvert installed, driveway created.  Shane MacLean, owner of ASR Excavating and Landscaping had it all done in less than 1.5 days.   Here’s the ground crew: Jamie, Dawson, Scott, Shane (on the phone) and Jeff from Kent Homes.  Jamie and Scott are our Postech guys who’ll be installing the posts that our house will sit on. Shane offered to let me try my hand at digging. It was absolutely necessary to bring the surveyor in to determine the exact placement of our house.  There’s very little wiggle room within the setbacks.  To gain …

While we’re waiting on the permit application process, here’s a little peek at material finishes  that are going into our new home.  Starting at the bottom, here are the floors.  This is a vinyl wood plank product that looks very much like wood but is water proof and not at all expensive. According to our research, this type of flooring seems to be taking over the market for these reasons.  This is Silver Bay Oak – a little distressed, a little barn boardish, warm wood with ashy overtones. The countertop for our Studio work space is a laminate called Cinder …

Here’s something everyone should know about building an “outside the box”  home that is smaller than the average 1250 square feet per person and environmentally friendly – a home that damages the land as little as possible.  Once you’ve found a builder that sees the vision and has the skills to make it a reality… … you’ve got to convince the permit people at the county and the bank that it won’t: A. fall over,           B. sink into the earth, and/or             C. be carried off by pelicans     …
