Cedar Street, Halifax
Designing every space to do double, and sometimes triple, duty made the most of every inch for active toddler, new baby, spaniel-Daisy and busy work-from-home parents. We completely re-vamped the main floor, starting with the foyer where we replaced a cramped corner closet, with two custom floor-to-ceiling outerwear and family gear storage cabinets. With no room for a bench, the extra-wide bottom steps are the spot for pulling on boots.
The tiny living room does double duty as the perfect playroom with furniture sized large enough for family cuddles yet small enough to leave ample floor space for play. Clever built-in corner storage keeps toys and books attractively displayed and off the floor. Along with two round storage tables, there’s a place for every toy to be tucked away when a calm, uncluttered evening is top priority.
We borrowed a little space from the already narrow dining room but made it work by parking a comfy dining bench up against the kitchen peninsula. A separate seating nook with added bench storage offers a quiet corner for a snack or morning coffee. Both seating areas keep the little ones under close watch yet out from under-foot while preparing meals.
Like solving a Rubik’s Cube, we twisted and turned the kitchen work areas, basement access, and powder room until we achieved the perfect layout. Much-needed pantry storage is accessible from a pocket door built into the cabinet wall and we’ve succeeded in maximizing work surface area by cleverly tweaking every inch of space.
Our clients’ collection of heirlooms and whimsical artwork set the pace for wallpaper, paint, fabric, furniture and area rug selections for a charming and joy-filled home. For this young family, in this small Halifax home, we’ve managed to squeeze in a whole lot of energetic family fun.
