Yah, we get it. We have to stay home – working from home, zoom socials, home gym – the new normal. But does safe at home have to be well, safe? Can’t we do this in a fun way? We sure can! Simply turn up the volume on fabulous colour and smile-inspiring decor.
At Thompson Run, we kicked traditional and beige to the curb with an exuberant palette and playful surprises. So, you’re wondering…. how do I kick my same-old-same-old to the curb without looking like a toddler’s birthday cake exploded in my living room?
So glad you asked! Here are three tips to get you started:
- Select an item with a colour so scrumptious, you wish you could eat it. You have to put paint on the walls and ceilings, so why not a colour that leaves you breathless with delight?
2. When you see something that makes you smile or even laugh out loud, get it. Put it in your home. No one is going to laugh at you. They’ll laugh at IT and isn’t that the point?
3. Don’t be afraid. It’s your home and it’s only stuff. Life is too short to not be surrounding yourself with things that give you happiness.
In this more-time-at-home era, let’s engage our minds and uplift our spirits with optimistic, joyful design. Your health and well-being are depending on it.

We always do our utmost to create spaces that are kind to people and the planet. We don’t change things or add things just for the sake of change. We work with existing cabinetry and millwork anytime it’s possible and we select from handmade and local as much as we can. In this home, the furnishings are nearly all vintage with some reupholstering done in cheery people-friendly fabrics. New purchases, such as light fixtures are designed to last and made with sustainable processes. The wall murals are artisan-designed and printed with non-toxic inks in a carbon neutral shop.
Home owner, L. Jones, had this to say: “Although I was a little nervous about Deborah’s choice of wall treatment for my master bedroom suite, I reminded myself that on each of our three previous projects together, Deborah’s wildly creative ideas always made me very happy and very much at home.
Every detail in my home works so well together. I love being enveloped by sumptuous green as I relax in my den and, as I look through the French doors to the living room at my Farrow&Ball Arsenic walls, I can’t imagine a more perfect place to be.
With a large scale botanical wallpaper, Deborah brought the dated Tuscan kitchen into the 21st century. All the rooms in the house are large with high ceilings so it always felt difficult to relax and settle in. Deborah assured me that our bold colour and pattern choices would turn that too-big feeling into a cozy comfy home. And it worked!
Deborah has a way of gently moving me past my indecision. She inspires confidence to really make a home your home. Thank goodness! Otherwise, I would still be looking at empty beige rooms!” — L. Jones
